Sunless tanning (also known as spray tanning or airbrush tanning) is a beauty treatment where the body is sprayed with a fine mist that reacts with the upper layer of skin to produce an artificial suntan that provides a natural, healthy glow.
Sunless tanning is the safest form of tanning and is a safe alternative to sun tanning. Spray tanning doesn't expose your skin to UV rays which can cause sunburn, premature aging, and possible skin cancer. Additionally, spray tans are applied quickly (usually takes 20-30 minutes) and provides speedy results that you'll notice after just 12 hours. It is important to note that your spray tan will continue to develop for the next 24-48 hours. Peak glow will usually occur about 48 hours post tan.
Most sunless tanning solutions are composed of two main tanning agents. The first is a bronzer. This cosmetic bronzer is temporary, but provides some immediate color. The bronzer will fully wash off during the first shower, so don't panic if your spray tan appears darker than you anticipated when you first see yourself post spray! The bronzer will continue to develop and darken as your tan "marinates", so again, don't panic if you wake up after sleeping in your classic tan to super dark skin. The bronzer will fully wash off to allow your real glow to make its appearance! Which leads us to the second and most important tanning agent - Dihydroxyacetone (known as DHA). DHA is a 3-carbon sugar compound that reacts with the outermost layer of the skin to produce that golden glow. DHA is extracted from sugar cane or beets and is made with glycerine fermentation. The skin browning effect happens when DHA reacts chemically with the amino acids, proteins, and peptides found in the upper epidermis. Every person has a different level of amino acids, which is why self tan development is different on each person. The amount of melanin in someone's skin as well as the thickness of their epidermis (outermost layer of skin) plays a part in the development of the tan, too. DHA is FDA approved for external application.
